Senior Project Topic: Gender-non-conformity

I've decided that I want to focus my senior project on the concept of Gender Identity and Expression, particularly as it relates to the Trans* community. This project has caught my attention because I don't identify Trans*, so it's hard for me to understand the kinds of things that this community goes through, as a cis-woman. The concept of gender, a concept that was invented by society, is something that fascinates me; what fascinates me even more are the people who bend and break the rules surrounding gender to live the way they feel most comfortable.
The main thing I hope to accomplish with this project is to better understand an identity that I don't identify with so that I can be a better advocate for their community. I've spent the past year working with GSA Network of Southern California, training Gay-Straight Alliance leaders to better provide for their LGBT communities, as well as beginning work with GLSEN to speak out for the belief that schools should be safe for all students, including the Trans* community.

Trans* = gender identities that do not necessarily align with the person's sex assigned at birth. These include transgendered/sexual, gender-non-conforming, genderqueer, etc.
Cis = Male/Female gender identities; a gender identity that aligns with the person's sex assigned at birth.
